George Metaxas is an experienced competition and electronic communications lawyer, practicing in Brussels since 1989. Prior to joining Oswell & Vahida in January 2008, George was a partner in the Brussels office of a US headquartered international law firm.
His competition practice includes the EU and international clearance of major transactions as lead outside counsel, complaints to the European Commission, general competition law advice, and work in State aid and cartel cases.
He is widely recognized as a leading EU telecoms and IT lawyer, advising market players and regulators on a wide range of industry issues associated with market entry, access negotiations and disputes, ex ante regulation, the combined application of sector regulation and competition law, the evolving European regulatory regime for electronic communications, regulatory strategy and novel legal issues in markets such as cloud computing and the Internet of things. His relevant experience also includes the drafting of national laws and regulations in the telecoms and IT field, in several multi-disciplinary international consultancy projects.
George's experience in intellectual property goes back to his work at the European Patent Office prior to his arrival in Brussels, and includes regular advice and lectures on European intellectual property matters.
His Brussels-based experience of more than 20 years also includes other categories of EU regulatory work, such as data protection, anti-dumping and regulatory advocacy.
In addition to his regulatory work, George frequently represents clients before the General Court and the Court of Justice of the EU.
George has co-chaired the International Bar Association (IBA) working group on the new antitrust legislation of China and has been actively involved in various related training programs and exchanges with the Chinese authorities.
